14 pet industry disruptors selected to present at Business of Pets

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, ENGLAND — The Pet Industry Federation (PIF) announced May 16 the 14 pet industry startups selected as finalists for its 2024 Innovation of the Year Award. Finalists were selected from a pool of entries and span various segments of the pet industry, from products to services to cutting-edge technologies.

These early-stage, innovative companies will have the opportunity to highlight their businesses and meet with investors at PIF’s Business of Pets conference, held June 5 and 6 at the Cranfield Management Development Centre near the Milton Keynes area of Buckinghamshire. PIF will crown one winner to be announced on June 8.

Finalists include:

  • Boil and Broth Ltd – Dehydrated pork bone broth
  • Doggi – Doggi Fly & Float
  • DotDotPet – Conditioning Dog Shampoos
  • EasyEat Feeder
  • Hemp Heros Calming dental sticks
  • MorePaws – A community platform for dog owners
  • Muddy Paws Express Dog Wash & Grooming Service – QuickClawz
  • PAWD DRINKS
  • Pawer Water
  • Pettle Pets – PettBrush3 Pro
  • Poorly Paws – Dog First Aid Kit
  • The Holistic Hound™ – Don’t Bug Me
  • Wonderful World of Treats
  • Xparkles Collars

Of the 14 finalists, five are focused on advancing the pet industry through nutrition — Boil and Broth, Hemp Heros, Pawer Water, Holistic Hound and Wonderful World of Treats. Boil and Broth offers a variety of dehydrated bone broth and kefir water products delivering gut health benefits to dogs and cats. Hemp Heros’ Calming Dental Sticks give pet owners a way to address two need states — oral health and anxiety support — in one fell swoop with all natural ingredients. Pawer Water has developed a hydration supplement for dogs formulated with collagen, electrolytes and other human-grade ingredients. Holistic Hound offers a range of supplements, meal toppers and other holistic pet health interventions. Wonderful World of Treats provides hand-baked soft chew treats in sustainable packaging.

“The response to our Innovation Award exceeded expectations in both quantity and quality,” said Nigel Baker, chief executive officer of PIF. “Our panel faced a challenging task in judging the submissions. We are looking forward to the finalists’ presentations at our conference next month and hope this opportunity will open up new avenues for them.”

The Business of Pets conference will feature a mix of educational presentations, workshops, panels and networking opportunities to keep pet industry players at the top of their game. According to PIF, the central themes of the conference will be innovation, finance and marketing. Specific topics on the agenda include funding and investment resources, marketing strategies, market trends including e-commerce, and emerging industry innovations.

“We’ve meticulously crafted a program following the resounding success of last year’s conference,” Baker said. “It promises to deliver immense value to business owners, directors and decision-makers in the pet industry.”

Pet Sustainability Coalition saves nearly 19 tons of CO2

BOULDER, COLO. — For Earth Month this past April, the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) brought the pet industry together to help save nearly 19 tons of CO2 through its third annual Earth Day Rally. The month-long event inspired thousands of industry professionals to take concrete steps toward sustainability.

The Earth Day Rally is a multi-stakeholder event that received support from the American Pet Products Association (APPA), World Pet Association (WPA), the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC), Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA), IndiePet, Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), and Pet Food Institute (PFI).

For this year’s rally, industry members used mobile app CO2 Hero to track their micro-actions. According to PSC, 730 industry professionals from 37 companies engaged in 10 daily eco-actions, ranging from offsetting business travel and greening their daily commute to recycling, consuming plant-based meals and reusing water bottles. These efforts helped save 18.7 tons of CO2, far surpassing the PSC’s goal of 15 tons.

The top performing companies included:

  • Freshpet, saving 6.76 tons of CO2
  • Earth Animal, saving 2.12 tons
  • Austin & Kat, saving 1.39 tons
  • Nulo, saving 1.18 tons
  • W.F. Young, saving 1.15 tons

Freshpet received a $2,000 PSC Project Credit and Earth Animal received $1,000 in carbon offsets from Native Energy.

Top performing industry members included:

  • Brett Duewell of Freshpet
  • Liliana Bolton of Freshpet
  • Lisa Diehl of Freshpet
  • Maria Lange of Earth Animal
  • Alexis Vance of W.F. Young

“By eliminating nearly 19 tons of CO2, the pet industry rallied to make a positive impact on our shared world,” said Jim Lamancusa, executive director of the PSC. “With Freshpet leading the way, the Pet Sustainability Coalition member network is a force to be reckoned with, posting double-digit growth year after year through its highly engaged community of action-oriented sustainability professionals. By engaging in our 30-day sprint, our participants have built habits that will last a lifetime.”

The APPA, WPA and NAVC amplified their support by donating $25,000 each to match participants’ climate points. The donations will go toward PSC’s Impact Fund and will allow the organization to support its initiatives in tackling plastic packaging and encouraging more sustainable protein sourcing practices.

Earth Animal served as a Defender-level sponsor of this year’s Earth Day Rally. Educator-level sponsors were Freshpet, Healthy Pet, Open Farm, Peel Plastics and Petco.

“This is our third year of sponsoring and participating in the Earth Day Rally and we get more inspired every year,” said Stephanie Volo, chief impact officer, Earth Animal. “It is such a fun and easy way to engage and educate the entire Earth Animal team. We love the internal drive to outdo our colleagues and tracking our progress against other companies. We are a proud sponsor, knowing that this makes it free for everyone across the industry to participate and that it supports the only such effort of action in the industry.”

Clio Snacks looks to build on successes

PISCATAWAY, NJ — Leveraging its position as a fresh, better-for-you snacking option in the refrigerated aisle, Clio Snacks has turned its Greek yogurt bars into a multichannel offering that appeals to a variety of consumer demographics.

The company has grown from an approximately $8 million business six years ago to a projected $60-plus million business in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of nearly 49.5%, said John McGuckin, chief executive officer of Clio Snacks.

“There’s just been a dramatic demand for Clio across multiple generations,” he said. “It’s a product that’s for everyone: all age groups, all ethnic groups, all levels on the economic ladder, and it can really be sold anywhere.”

McGuckin, who joined Clio as CEO in October 2021, attributed the product’s success to its portable format, simultaneously healthy but indulgent quality and high-protein formulation, which have helped appeal to the modern consumer’s flavor preferences and emphasis on value and convenience. The coated, Greek-yogurt filled bars have resonated particularly with working mothers and lately the Gen Z student population, McGuckin said.

“I think from a price-value relationship and from the gratification of the bar itself … we just found sort of that sweet spot with the consumer today,” he explained.

Clio has developed an established presence in retailers like Walmart and Whole Foods, and the company continues to expand its distribution in club channels, convenience stores, hospitality and vending. The company’s recent partnership with Dot Foods also has opened new foodservice distribution opportunities in educational institutions. Clio products are now in almost 150 colleges and universities, and McGuckin expects that figure to double by September.

“We see foodservice exploding,” he said. “If you were to sit in our room and look at our three-year strategy plan, you would see foodservice becoming a major player.”

Additionally, Clio recently made its international debut and launched three stock-keeping units (SKU) in 450 Canadian Walmart locations. The company is looking to expand into additional retailers within the Canadian market, which McGuckin believes could be a significant contributor to Clio’s revenue.

“The index on yogurt in Canada is significantly higher than the US on a per population basis,” he said. “We think in this particular category, it could be 15% to 16% of our overall business just based on yogurt consumption that we see north of the border.”

Domestically, the company is looking to increase the all commodity value (ACV) of its existing SKUs. Clio’s overall business sits at approximately 60% ACV, but only two of its SKUs have reached 60% ACV. The company is aiming to have four to eight SKUs at 60% ACV, which will require proper retail merchandising and increased consumer trial. Successful improvements to merchandising and trial for refrigerated bars could put the entire category on a similar trajectory to the growth of the hummus market more than a decade ago, McGuckin said.

He compared the category’s potential based on his experience as executive vice president of North American sales for Sabra Dipping Co., where he witnessed the hummus market rise from roughly $75 million in 2007 to almost $1 billion by 2013.

“People didn’t really know what hummus was, and then they tasted Sabra, and they went crazy,” McGuckin said. “It changed the whole dynamic of the category and really helped to build out what we call today this ‘dip destination within the deli.’

“We think we have a tremendous amount of whitespace in front of us, and a big part of that is getting this category defined through a category leadership approach with our customers to convince them that this is a category that is important and vital and dramatic and incremental.”

Older pet owners retain the reins in Germany

WIESBADEN, GERMANY — The Central Association of Zoological Specialist Companies (ZZF), a German trade association, has released its latest report on the Deutsch pet market in tandem with Interzoo 2024, held May 7 to 10 in Nuremberg. According to the association, 45% of German households had at least one pet in 2023, fueling €7.1 billion (roughly $7.7 billion USD) in pet food and product sales throughout the year, up 9.5% from 2022.

Unlike in the United States, where dogs are “man’s best friend,” cat ownership is more popular in Germany. In 2023, ZZF recorded populations of 15.7 million cats and 10.5 million dogs throughout the country, representing 25% and 21% of total German pet ownership, respectively.

By generation, those over the age of 60 represent the largest cohort of German pet owners at 25%, followed by 22% who are between the ages of 50 to 59, 19% between the ages of 30 and 39, 18% between the ages of 40 and 49, and 16% ages 29 and younger.

Pet food sales in-store amounted to nearly €4.5 billion ($4.8 billion USD) in 2023, up 11.4% year-over-year. This compares to pet supplies and accessory sales of €1.1 billion ($1.2 billion USD). Most pet food sales (63%) occurred in the food retail channel, while 27% occurred in the specialty retail channel, according to ZZF. For supplies and accessories, however, the tables were turned — 22% of sales for this category were in the food retail channel, while 78% were made at specialty retail.

Online pet product sales continued to gain speed in 2023 with an estimated sales volume of €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion USD), up 9.4% year-over-year.

Unsurprisingly, cat food represented the largest share of pet food sales in Germany in 2023, totaling €2.3 billion ($2.5 billion USD) and growing 14.4% over 2022. According to ZZF, wet cat food sales made up the lion’s share of total cat food revenue at €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion USD), up 15.3% year-over-year. Dry cat food accounted for €396 million ($426.7 million USD), up 11.3% year-over-year, and cat treat and snacks accounted for €372 million ($400.8 million USD), up 14% year-over-year.

Dog food sales were up 9.1% from 2022 to nearly €2 billion ($2.2 billion USD). Wet dog food drove the highest year-over-year growth rate with €677 million ($729.5 million USD) in sales for 2023, up 13.7% from 2022, followed by dog treats and snacks at €748 million ($806 million USD), up 7.4% year-over-year, and dry dog food at €547 million ($589.4 million USD), up 6.1% year-over-year.
